Small trading houses are struggling to compete with the big four (Hennessy, Martell, Remy Martin and Courvoisier), as for example Larsen bought in January by Rémy Cointreau. But some resist, as Bache-Gabrielsen has a plan to move to Louzac-St-André. Philippe Coste (Meukow) calls to distinguish. Jean-Marc Girardeau (Camus) targets special markets. ABK6 invested in vineyards. The company owns 240 hectares.

Martell announced on February the 4th to be in talks to acquire the company at Le Maine au Bois SAS, distillation, storage and trade of eaux-de-vie AOC Cognac (based in Saint-Eugène in Charente-Maritime, turnover of 16,5 million euros).

A slowdown in the growth of global spirits market is expected by 2016, according to the firm IWSR. Growth should be almost halved compared to 43% between 2007 and 2011, but turnover will increase faster than volumes, the market is facing high range.

Cognac shipments in 2012 reached a turnover of 2,391 billion euros, 16,7% more than in 2011. 161,8 million bottles were shipped worldwide last year. The first cognac market is Southeast Asia (7,5% : 62,6 million bottles sold in 2012).
