Louis Cullen has written a book called "Le choix de Cognac" (The choice of Cognac) which relates the arrival of Irish merchants in the Charente and the foundation of brokering houses. The book is published by Le Croît-Vif at 25 euros.

Pernod Ricard sees turnover rise

Ricard has reported a 1.5% rise in turnover for the first quarter. In the first 9 months of the financial year turnover has risen by 67% thanks to the contribution of the Allied Domecq brands (including Martell).
Distillation in the cognac area

In 2005-2006, winegrowers in the cognac designated area distilled 590,000 hectoliters of pure alcohol whereas the trade buyers had set their requirements at 545,000 hl. In March 2006, shipments of cognac rose by 10.7% compared to March 2005. This is equivalent to an 5.5% increase over a year.

Exports of cognac are rising more and more (95.6% of shipments worth 1.3 billion euros) while consumption within France continues to fall (-14.3% on domestic sales in 2005). Exports ensure that cognac is heading towards its fourth consecutive year of growth (+4.9%)
Cognac week brings together restaurant owners in Poitou-Charentes

The Bnic is organizing a week of events to promote cognac in the Poitou-Charentes from 1 to 8 June. 800 restaurant owners, wine retailers and café owners from 14 towns in the region are taking part. 860,000 bottles are sold locally, some 18% of the French market.
