The 16th edition of Irexpo will take place on 1 and 2 April at the Ireo in Cherves-Richemont (Charente). The event includes the Borderies eaux-de-vie competition and the white pineau competition. To take part, two bottles taken from commercial stock must be sent before 28 March.
Pineau producers angry

Pineau producers demonstrated yesterday in Cognac to protest against purchases at low cost (about -15% over the last two years). They vented their anger on the Comptoir français commercial (CFC) which is accused of buying a batch 40% below the normal price. The pineau producers’ union has bemoaned a 2.6% drop in sales in three years.

The magazine "Impact" (February 2006) has published the league table of the highest sales in 2005. Smirnoff vodka heads the list, whereas cognac appears in 21st place with Hennessy (3.7 million cases). Rémy-Martin is 52nd (1.8 million), Martell is 77th (1.3 million) and Courvoisier is 88th (1.1 million). Grey Goose vodka (Gensac-la-Pallue) lies in 40th position (2.3 million cases).
Cognac dries up in Russia

A logistics problem (new duty labels not ready) is blocking all Russian imports of alcohol at the border. Russia is the 7th largest market for cognac in the world.

Hennessy seeking to expand

The Hennessy cognac house would like to construct 10 storage warehouses at Bagnolet, taking its storage capacity to 118,500 m². A public inquiry is being held from 24 March to 24 April.
Independent wine growers in the Charente seeking higher profile

Unknown to the general public, there are some 10,000 independent wine growers in France and 80 (out of 6,000 wine growers) in the cognac area. Their status is defined as controlling everything relating to their production from A to Z, from the rootstock to the end consumer. The independent producers are launching a new three year communication program (new slogan : "Savoir-être du vin", new visuals) In addition the independent producers in the Charentes are looking for ways to confirm their representation : they have no official representation within the cognac trade body and are completely swamped by their opposite numbers in Aquitaine and Languedoc.
Sideco steps down

Sideco (society for the development of cognac), a financial link between brokers and wine growers, is expected to put an end to its activities within 2 to 3 years.
Cognac overproduction ?

According to the magazine "Le Paysan Vigneron" cognac pot stills may produce 580,000 hl of pure alcohol before 31 March compared to a target of 544,000. Overproduction last year was only 14,000 hl.
