Rémy Cointreau has reported a 0.5% rise in sales for the first half of the 2005-2006 fiscal year to 415.1 million euros. The strike at Rémy-Martin continues despite progress on salaries.

According to the Bureau national interprofessionnel du cognac (BNIC) - the trade body - there are 12,317 vineyards in the cognac delimited area, including 4,963 producers of red wine and 6,149 producers of white wine. The cognac merchant houses employ 2,500 people.

Rémy-Martin : strike intensifies

122 strikers from Rémy-Martin blocked the town center of Cognac on 17 October. They are demanding a pay increase of 150 euros.

The Bureau national interprofessionnel du cognac (BNIC) - the trade body - is spending 710,000 euros on a public relations campaign which will run until 31 December in 31 national newspapers and magazines. In 2004, 5.7% of cognac was sold in France, some 7.7 million bottles, compared to 14 million bottles twenty years ago.

Winegrowers in the cognac delimited area

In 1995, there were 10,058 vineyards in the cognac delimited area. At the end of 2004 there were only 6,306 left, a 37.3% drop in ten years. According to the BNIC professional trade organization, 47.5% of winegrowers of white wine for cognac are over 50 years old.

Raynal, the cognac producer based in Cognac (56 employees, sales of 18 million euros), has been taken over by the Scottish firm William Grant & sons, the world’s third-largest producer of Scotch whisky.
