Spirits attack cider

The French Spirits Federation (FFS) has started summary legal proceedings against the national cider professional organization (Unicid) at the High Court in Paris. It wants to ban an advertising campaign which ridicules certain products and consumer habits.

Allied-Domecq : Pernod-Ricard sole candidate

Constellation Brands has decided not to bid for Allied Domecq, the world’s second largest wines and spirits company. Pernod-Ricard (number 3) remains the only candidate with a bid worth 10.7 billion euros. All now depends on the shareholders’ meetings at Pernod-Ricard (on 30 June) and Allied Domecq (4 July) as well as the decisions of the competition authorities.

ABK6 cognacs have received awards at the " Los Angeles County Fair 2005 ", " Spirits Challenge London 2005 " and " Brussels Spirit Awards 2005 " competitions. The Leyrat house has received awards at " Spirits Challenge London 2005 " et " Mondial Brussels 2005 ".

Rémy-Cointreau : net profits fall by 68.3%

Rémy-Cointreau has reported an 3.3% fall in operating profits to 167.7 million euros for the 2004-2005 fiscal year. Its net profits have fallen by 68.3% from 74.4 to 24.2 million. Even so, Rémy-Cointreau is counting on organic growth of at least 10% in operating profits this year and is to concentrate on its key brands : Remy-Martin, Cointreau, Pasoa and Bol’s as well as the Piper Heidsieck and Charles Heidsieck champagnes. The 3 sites at Reims are to be merged without any redundancies.

Cognac bites into the Big Apple

Cognac is very much in view in the United States, notably in New York. It is much appreciated by young Afro-Americans. Rappers have adopted the spirit. Rémy-Martin rents space in a club. Camus has joined forces with a brand of rap to launch Séraphin cognac. Competition comes from Grey Goose vodka (1.8 million cases in the US in 2004) which is produced at Gensac-la-pallue (Charente).
