Pineau des Charentes opens its doors
25 août 2004
The Pineau des Charentes committee asked its members to open their doors to the public and about 130 producers did so on the weekend of 7 and 8 August. Christian Baudry, the president of the committee, explains that the principle of open days is to associate the presentation of pineau with that of regional products. Although many tourists took advantage of the operation to discover the product, Christian Baudry points out that local customers still represent 40% of pineau buyers.

HACCP and tracability : software houses sharpening up their offers
25 août 2004
On Tuesday 10 August at the Cognac Chamber of commerce and Industry, the Cognac-based company BBS Informatique organized a demonstration of the tracability software "Astrolabe" ; developed by a Parisian company. "Astrolabe" was presented to about ten wine growers from the cognac area. It is able to handle the production tracability and the HACCP method (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) which will be required by law on 01/01/2005. Another tracability software program, aimed specifically at the production of cognac which, unlike Astrolabe, does not handle HACCP, is also being developed at L & M Informatique at Saint-Laurent-de-Cognac.

One hundred wine growers collared for exceeding QNV quotas
25 août 2004
Customs officials have gone through wine growers’ harvest returns (2000/2001 and 2001/2002) in Charente and Charente-Maritime and 100 growers have been caught exceeding the quantity of wine normally produced (QNV). The customs service has said that it is speeding up the referral of cases to the Prosecutor’s Office and an initial hearing is scheduled for 19 October before the High Court in Angoulême. The stricter controls follow a call for more severe measures by the regional prefect last September and come at a time when Parliament is preparing to vote on a law to transform flat-rate fines into customs fines which are heavier.

Cognac appellation protected over and above
25 août 2004
The "Cognac" appellation (and its translations) cannot be used to refer to products other than spirits. The Office for the Harmonization of the Internal Market (OHIM) has thus decided, in a ruling made on 07/15/2004, following an appeal by the Bureau interprofessionnel du Cognac (BNIC) against the registering of the term "Konyagi" as a community brand name referring to alcoholic drinks, beers, non-alcoholic drinks and clothing. At the same time the OHIM has extended the protection afforded to AOC Cognac to the entire European area. This is a victory for the BNIC which has thus succeeded in going beyond the "principle of specialty" usually current in brand law and which holds that a homonymous brand is not considered parasitical if it refers to a product different to the one referred to in the initial appellation.
