Courvoisier is launching a premium cognac : “L’Essence de Courvoisier”, a blend of cognacs from the early 20th century.

Harvest in sight

For the majority of winegrowers, the harvest is scheduled to start on Monday 28 September. The 75,000 hectares of the cognac designated area will be harvested within several weeks. The SGV winegrowers’ union organized a meeting last Friday to give growers the latest recommendations. The harvest is expected to be average with an average yield of 115 hectoliters per hectare for an alcohol level of about 10 degrees.

“Black” arrives in America

“Hennessy Black”, which was launched in May exclusively on the US market, is designed to compete with white spirits, vodka and tequila, mainly among female consumers. André de Beausset, who has been international director at Hennessy since February, oversaw the launch in ten test states. Bernard Peillon, CEO of Hennessy, sees signs of a recovery but is waiting for it to become stronger. According to him, China and Russia are still far from being out of the woods. The CEO has refuted the possible sale of Hennessy to Diageo and remains ‘totally serene”.

Croizet cognacs : Varshavsky rumored to have disappeared

The Russian magnate Vadim Varshavsky, the owner of Croizet cognacs at St-Même (40,000 cases and 4 million euros annually, 23 employees), is said to be crippled by debts of 3 to 4 billion dollars and may have disappeared. At Croizet, this disappearance is being put into perspective but it seems that Varshavsky’s grand ambitions for his company, which he saw as the 5th most important cognac house, seem to be in jeopardy.

Lafragette saved by mistake

Jean-Paul Lafragette, the owner of L&L cognacs and liqueurs in Cognac, was being prosecuted for bankruptcy but no longer following a ruling by the court of appeal in Agen that the subpoena was the wrong one. Nevertheless he received a 6-month suspended prison sentence and a fine of 10,000 for bogus invoices.

SGV reacts over prices

The SGV winegrowers’ union has reacted strongly to the weighted average prices observed at the farm gates : 573 euros per hectoliter of pure alcohol in Petite Champagne and 665 euros in Fins Bois. Officials at the SGV consider that “This practice is unacceptable, it shows total contempt for the winegrowers’ work”. In addition, the SGV is organizing a meeting for winegrowers affected by hailstone damage.

ADVM is no more

The Merpins winegrowers’ defense association (ADVM) has held its 7th and final general assembly : it has no longer any reason to exist as the winegrowers’ problems have been settled by the courts. In 2004, 104 winegrowers in Charente and Charente-Maritime were ordered to pay jointly 2.8 billion euros to discharge the debts of the private distillery in Merpins.

Hennessy shooting a new corporate video

Hennessy is currently shooting its new corporate video. Scenes will be filmed in the streets of Cognac, notably with a camera attached to a balloon for panoramic views of the town.

Charity auction at BNIC this Thursday evening

This evening 23 exceptional bottles of cognac are going on sale at the BNIC as part of its annual charity sale “La Part des Anges”. This year the proceeds are going to the French Institute (which brings together all the great French academies : fine arts, sciences, moral and political sciences, etc.). The bottles have been donated by 23 cognac houses. “Almost half these bottles have been created specially for La Part des Anges, which shows that the event has reached maturity and the enthusiasm it arouses.” says delightedly Jérôme Durand, the communication and marketing director at the BNIC. 500 guests are expected. The proceeds will go towards restoration work on paintings from the collection at the château de Chantilly.

Merpins obliged to contain the Rémy-Martin risk

Merpins is going to put in place a technological risk prevention plan, which it is obliged to do given the presence of the Rémy-Martin storehouses in the town (over 50,000 tons of alcohol, classed high Seveso threshold).
