Hennessy in favor of a readjustment

The CEO and DG of the Hennessy cognac house, R. de Farcy and Y. Filloux, are in favor of an increase in the amount distilled. They consider that distilling 500,000 hectoliters would enable stability to be achieved. Hennessy accounts for 40% of world sales of cognac (almost 4 million cases sold each year).

The Jarnac cognac house Courvoisier, which belongs to Allied Domecq, has just created a company called "Atelier Courvoisier", specializing in fashion, to revitalize its image. A first fashion show was recently organized in New York. In another move, Courvoisier has joined forces with an American cigar manufacturer to launch its brand of cognac seasoned cigars.

Principle of land allocation for cognac

The general union of winegrowers in the Cognac AOC, during their AGM at the start of May, discussed at length the reorganization of the vineyard area and the introduction of a system of land allocation. This principle, which determines what land can be used for in a three-year period, would replace the double use system (production of wine and cognac on the same land). It is due to take effect for 2005-2006 but the legislative framework has yet to be approved.

Viticulture update

The viticultural technical commission has presented a the BNIC a retrospective of the 2003 harvest, bringing the Cognac area into compliance with European norms on hygiene and tracability as well as giving a progress update on research into the Esca fungus.

Musée des art du cognac

The museum of the art of cognac, which covers 1,600 m², will open in Cognac on 26 June 2004 at place de la Salle-Verts. Just opposite, the Visitors’ Centre will open the same day (400 m², 1.9 million euros of investments) where tourists will be able to discover the Cognac area.
