Hennessy cancels harvest festival because of swine flu

Hennessy had intended to hold a great harvest day on its property at La Bataille near Juillac-le-Coq. The festival, which would have involved over 600 people, has been cancelled because of the threat of swine flu.

Alain Philippe bows out

Alain Philippe, who has been the director of the BNIC since 1996, will be retiring on 01/01/2010. After a first part of his career in the construction industry, Alain Philippe fought for the interests of the profession. He will be remembered as the person who had to implement a scheduled lay-off program at the BNIC in 2000. But when he received the Legion of Honor last December, he insisted on sharing his honor with the hundred or so employees of the organization.

Cognacs enter the guide Hachette

The Hachette wine guide will include armagnacs and cognacs for the first time in its 2010 edition with a selection of about one hundred references. Next year, the guide, which was created 25 years ago, will include 10,536 references, twice the number at the beginning.

Solidarity among winegrowers : SGV winegrowers’ union calling for annual yield overrun

Solidarity among winegrowers following the storm on 11 May will be supervised by a prefectoral order. Two orders have been drawn up, one by the prefect in Charente on 1 July and one by the prefect in Charente-Maritime dated 3 August. The winegrowers’ union has stated, “For the moment, these orders open the way for purchasing harvests only within the annual yield quantities. A request has been sent to the appropriate authorities to enable solidarity to exceed the annual yield but limited to an additional 5hl of pure alcohol per hectare (limit of climatic reserves). No reply has yet been made concerning this request.

Diageo confirms its interest in Hennessy

Paul Walsh, CEO of Diageo, the world’s leading spirits company, has taken the opportunity of the presentation of his group’s results to affirm its interest in acquiring the 66% of Mot-Hennessy which it does not yet hold, thus confirming the information put forward by the Financial Times, despite denials by LVMH. Even if the operation makes sense from a strategic point of view (refocusing), analysts do not see Bernard Arnault giving up his wines ands spirits operation which is a real cash generator.

CL Financial (Hine cognac) deconsolidates

CL Financila, a Caribbean group hard hit by the economic crisis, is selling off the wine brokerage site chateauonline.com, one of the original market leaders along with 1855 and Wineandco. It has already sold the wine merchant chain “Repaire de Bacchus” which has 33 stores in the Paris area. Based in Trinidad and Tobago, CL Financial, which also owns Hine cognac and was also an shareholder in Marie Brizard, has been partially nationalized.

Solidarity among winegrowers receives official approval

With the grape harvest due to begin in the Cognac area within the next 3 weeks, the winegrowers’ union has noticed a considerable difference between plots and is delaying any statement regarding the season (the Bnic viticultural station forecast is for an average of 115hl/hectare). Thousands of hectares of vines were damaged by hailstones on 11 May in the area around Rouillac, in the south Charente and Juillac-le-Coq. An order from the prefecture opens the way for an unaffected winegrower to transfer his quota surplus to a colleague stricken by the damage.

Taking stock of sprayers

Independent winegrowers, the Chamber of agriculture and the French wine and vine institute are organizing a forum on sprayers on Thursday from 9.30 a.m. onwards at the Rmy-Martin vineyards at Juillac-le-Coq.

Cognac sales flagging

In the 2009 cognac campaign which ended on 31 July, sales of cognac fell by 14.4% in volume (to 130 million bottles) and by 9.3% in value. In North America, the drop in volume was 17% compared to 15.3% in Europe and 10.8% in Asia. Sales in Asia fell by 20.6%.
