A fire broke out on 15 October at the headquarters of Cognacs Godet (22 employees) close to the Saint Nicolas district of La Rochelle. It was exactly the scenario which everyone feared because of the 5,000 hectoliters of pure alcohol stocked in the town center close to densely populated areas. Fortunately, the warehouses were not affected. Administrative measures have increased in recent years to encourage the company to move out of the town center. Martell : 149 jobs axed
16 octobre 2002
Renault-Bisquit and Martell, which form the cognac branch of the Pernod group under the name of "Martell & Cie", have presented their restructuring plan to the works committees. It includes reductions in personnel but also redeployments. 149 jobs are to disappear and 36 will be created, a net loss of 113 jobs. Martell & Cie currently employ 465 employees (393 at Martell and 72 at Renault-Bisquit). The plan calls for only three of the present nine storage sites to be retained, the regrouping of bottling at the Lignières facility and the construction of a reception site at Chanteloup. The restructuring represents an investment of 11 million euros. Martell was bought by Seagram from the Firino Martell family in 1992 and has been losing market share ever since, dropping from 1.8 to 1.2 million cases sold.
