Camus stands firm

Cyril and Jean-Baptiste represent the fifth generation of the family in Camus, the fifth-largest cognac house, but which is run by Loik Rousset, which is turning more and more to the upmarket sector (40 % of sales). Turnover has fallen sharply (from 66 million euros in 97-98 to only 35 million in 2000-2001) but profitability has improved. 1.2 million euros have just been invested to reorganize the bottling line.

Sabaté Diosos reorganizes its management

The Hériard-Dubreuil and Sabaté families, the reference shareholders, have appointed a new CEO, Gérard Epuin, from Sabaté Diosis (Radoux cooperage at Jonzac in the Charente-Maritime and Seguin Moreau at Merpins in Charente) in place of the two co-presidents. The company is to be transformed into a limited liability company with a board of directors in order to speed up the integration of Sabaté and Diosos after a difficult first financial year in 2001.

Hennessy and Meukow liven up the festival

The Meukow cognac house is participating in the Cognac crime film festival by organizing evenings during the event. Meukow’s latest product, a series of four fruit cocktails, has been unveiled. In addition, the Hennessy cognac house is making available its function rooms on the quay during the festival. Screenings and an evening on 13 April will be held there.

Courvoisier

Courvoisier has presented stable accounts to the SICA des Baronnies rural economic development group (which supplies it with eaux-de-vie) which show a progression of almost 3 % in the US market and hopes to maintain its purchase prices "if other merchants" do not force prices down.

Cognac rediscovers France

Difficulties in the international market are forcing cognac houses to turn once again to the French market which has fallen by half in the last 20 years. The opening of a cognac bar in Paris by Rémy Martin and the launch of Fine cognac by Hennessy, which is aimed at supermarket retailers, are part of this trend. Martell intends to take advantage of the Pernod Ricard distribution network. The French market remains the third largest market in terms of volume behind the US and England.

Modest year for cognac

93.3 % of cognac production was exported in 2001, a total equivalent of 135.9 million bottles, a slight fall compared to 2000. Cognac is worth 1.3 billion euros in France’s annual trade surplus. 51.9 % of exports go to Europe with a 2.6 % increase in volume. Shipments to the US rose by 2.9 % in volume and account for 37.3 % of exports. Shipments to Asia fell by 12.1 % compared to 2000 (-15.4 % in Japan).

Foreign trade : cognac pulling its weight

Figures published by the regional customs and foreign trade authorities show a surplus of 1.2 billion euros for regional foreign trade which is still rising. Cognac, despite its difficulties, accounts for a large part of these good results with exports worth 1.25 million euros. The Poitou-Charentes area is in 19th position for exports and 21st for imports.

Taransaud launches the "primeur" barrel

The Taransaud cooperage (Cognac) has just launched the "primeur" barrel in the US, bought just like good wine, two years ahead with payment of 50 % at the time of order and delivery at a guaranteed price two years later. Tarancaud has also launched a policy of tracability "from tree to barrel" with the ongoing aim of placing itself as the reference in barrels for the world’s best wines. The Chêne group (Taransaud, Garnier, Canton cooperage, Thalès) hopes to follow last year’s 45 million euros with 50 million this year. The group has 20 % of its activity in bordeaux, 10 % in cognac, 5 % in burgundy and 65 % in exports. It is well established in California and would like to expand in Australia (where it has just taken complete control of a former joint venture) and in New Zealand.

The success story of L&L

L&L, the only distillery still in operation in Cognac, has won the gold medal in the 13th regional competition "Saveurs en Poitou-Charentes" in the multi-region category. Thanks to its Alizé cognac, a blend of the five leading vineyard areas, the company has been very successful in the American market following an exclusive launch in 2000. L&L, which employs 70 people, exports over 80 % of its production to the US and has a turnover of 30 million euros.
