Recovery in the cognac market
19 octobre 1999
After years of decline, the world cognac market is becoming stabilized. Such is the conclusion of Rémy-Cointreau (Rémy-Martin cognac) and Hennessy who have seen their turnover increase. Rémy-Cointreau has reported a turnover of 2.5 billion francs in the first half-year of 1999, a 24.8% increase over the same period in 1998. The upturn of cognac sales by its subsidiary Rémy-Martin has been confirmed with +14.6% in the first half-year, thanks to new products and the good results noted in the US and Asia. At Hennessy, sales reached 3 million cases last year for a turnover of 4.6 billion francs. However, Yann Filloux, chief executive of Hennessy, has just announced his wish to lower his purchase prices next year which has infuriated the Confédération paysanne and the FSVC. Finally, to mark the new millenium, Hennessy is launching "Timeless", a blend of eleven exceptional cognacs presented in a crystal carafe created by Thomas Bastide, a designer at Baccarat. 2,000 will be offered for sale at 18,000 francs each.

Cognac : gloomy harvest
5 octobre 1999
The harvest began last week in the Cognac area in somber mood with markets still choked and the likelihood of a bumper crop (11 million hectoliters at 8.5°) of which only just over a third will be used for cognac (the rest will become table wines, sparkling wines etc or be used in preventive distillation). The proposals made to the Ministry of Agriculture for the organization of the season include a double quota of 6hl of pure alcohol per hectare and a ceiling of 120 hl in volume per hectare. 53,000 hectares suffice for cognac distillation, 700 hectares for must for pineau and 1,000 hectares for local wines whereas the vineyards cover 81,000 hectares. Despite financial aid made available for pulling up and replanting, only 1650 hectares have been pulled up (including 500 permanently) and 350 have been replanted for local wines. Stocks remain high at 3.4 million hectoliters of pure alcohol. Moreover, little use has been made of preferential loans (285 wine growers in Charente and 574 in Charente Maritime), as well as the renegotiation of MSA payments.
