Cognac : promotions from Lille to Saintes

About fifty restaurateurs from the Lille area have signed a charter to be "ambassadors for cognac", through which they accept to support the work of the Bnic for the promotion of cognac as an aperitif. Moreover, 140 charters have been signed in the main towns in the two departments of the Charente area, compared to 75 last year.

Cognac Hardy in Burgundy hands

The Commercial court of Cognac has selected the Burgundian company "les grands vins Jean-Claude Boisset" (blackcurrant liqueurs including ’L’héritier Guyot" in Dijon, and Burgundy, Beaujolais and Côtes du Rhône wines, 650 employees) to take over Cognac Hardy which filed for bankruptcy in January. The new owner, chosen ahead of tow other candidates (Klesh and Vinexpansion) exports (60%) mainly to Great Britain, Japan, North America and Switzerland. It has undertaken to take on the 32 employees.

Hennessy : sales up

Sales of Hennessy cognac rose by 2 % in the first half year of 1999 and its turnover rose by 15.5 %, thanks notably to the upturn in Asia.

The BNIC develops its Internet site

The BNIC (Cognac Inter-professional National Bureau) is extending its Internet site (bnic.fr and cognac.fr) by including a directory of producers and traders and by opening a section giving statistics and legal information open only to professionals.

Martell : small growers will not be raising their glasses any more

Cognac Martell has denied a communiqué from MODEF stating that the cognac house had cancelled all purchase contracts for quantities less than 10 hl of pure alcohol in the area of Aigre in the fin bois region. According to Martell reductions in purchases will be spread proportionally over all its suppliers.

BNIC raises age of XO

The plenary assembly of the BNIC has decided to raise the minimum age requirement for XO from 6 to 10 years and has approved the requirement to allocate quantities and hectares in advance : growers will have to indicate which hectares will be reserved for cognac, pineau and wine in the course of their next harvest declaration in November. On the other hand, the BNIC has delayed the marketing of a white cognac or a cognac blended with a wine distillate. Moreover the assembly has started to give consideration to a "Grand Cru" label of origin.

Cognac : slight upturn in sales

Sales of cognac rose by 0.8 % in May to 25,675 hl of pure alcohol. France is leading the upturn in sales with a 13.5 % increase to 1,812 hl whereas, paradoxically, the normally buoyant US market has fallen by 22.2 % to 7,331 hl. Sales are also picking up in Asia (with the exception of Japan) and in Taiwan in particular (+617 %, 1,079 hl).

Remy-Cointreau : back in profit

Remy-Cointreau returned to the black in fiscal year 98-98 to 31 March with 646 million francs for a turnover of 7.6 billion, a rise of only 0.6 %, but thanks to its policy of asset disposal (1.9 billion) the company has been able to lower its debts/capital ratio to 1.52 % compared to 2.35 % a year ago. This ratio , above 1, is still considered to be excessive and could be lowered to 0.87 % with the setting up of a joint distribution structure with the British firm Highland Distillers and the American Jim Bearn Brands. Finally, despite Remy-Martin falling below the 2 billion mark last year (-9 %), the year has begun well in the cognac branch with exports up by 40 %.

Seguin-Moreau takes over Gatard

Seguin-Moreau, which has taken control of the Tonnellerie Gatard at Sigogne has reported a turnover of 351 million francs and profits up by 37 %.

Hennessy : partial agreements
