Stoppages at Bisquit and Hennessy

Stoppages occurred on Friday 11 June at Bisquit where a program of 25 redundancies is under way and at Hennessy where the Hennessy 2001 program calls for staff reductions without redundancies, but where the unions are protesting against the current project for working time organization.

Remy-Martin has been carrying out research for two years on wines using the merlot and cabernet sauvignon grapes on its Grollet estate at St Même les Carrières where 16 of the 40 hectares have been converted using double-grafting (which enables a rapid harvest).

The Cave du Poitou out of the red

In 1998, the Cave du Poitou increased the number of bottles sold by 40 % to a total of 2.8 million, and is aiming for 3 million in 2000. The 310 member wine growers produced 38,000 hl, an increase of 2,000 over 1997. Moreover the Cave was awarded the silver medal during the last general agricultural competition in Paris for its Château de Brizay 1998 , the Chardonnay VDSQ and the Sauvignon available from Carrefour.

Martell : worries

The new planned labor reduction scheme at Martell, which has been extended to employees aged 52 who will be able to take early retirement with 83 % of salary, is causing concern, not for those taking early retirement, but for the future of the company, given that a half dozen senior managers are involved including Patrick Firino-Martell himself. But he has indicated that he will not leave immediately. Moreover, Patrick Firino-Martell has announced the visit this autumn of senior management from the parent company Seagram for the introduction of a plan to reactivate the brand.

White cognac not attractive

Crime film festival - one more time ?

The fate of the Cognac crime film festival will be settled on 29 June during the meeting of the standing committee of the BNIC. But it seems that its supporters have been able to plead successfully for the festival in 2000, on condition that they make proposals for concrete action to make it live outside the four days in April. Indeed certain parts of the cognac trade have called the usefulness of the Festival into question.

Pernod-Ricard ready to take over Allied Domecq

According to information published in the Sunday Telegraph on 30 May, Pernad-Ricard is about to offer 50 billion francs to take over Allied Domecq, the world’s second largest spirits company behind Diageo. However, other groups such as Brown Forman and Bacardi are also interested in Allied Domecq. Pernod-Ricard controls Bisquit cognac at Rouillac and Allied Domecq controls Courvoisier at Jarnac. An agreement between Pernod-Ricard and Allied Domecq would create the world’s largest company in this field.

Martell : early retirement at 52

On 27 May management at Martell (Cognac) proposed that 67 employees aged 52 and over (in all departments) be offered early retirement on 30 September. In June 1998, the agreement scheduled the retirement of 39 employees aged over 53 before 31 December 2001. Sales of Martell have fallen by over 30 % in four years, from 24 million to 15.3 million bottles.

Hennessy, Renault-Bisquit : two meetings for nothing

The latest discussion concerning the loss of 159 jobs at Hennessy, due on 36 May, has been postponed until 10 to 15 June. Unions and management are giving themselves more time to negotiate. Moreover, following the meeting of the works committee on Tuesday concerning the loss of 30 jobs at Renault-Bisquit (Pernod-Ricard) at Rouillac, a new meeting is scheduled between 7 and 12 June.

Four cooperages in the Top 30

Barrel-making in the region is well represented in the annual review of the top performing 100 companies in France, drawn up by the monthly magazine "L’Entreprise". Four cooperages in Poitou-Charentes appear in the first thirty and, moreover, are the only representatives of the regional economy in the Top 100. Seguin Moreau of Cognac is in 14th place (profitability 12.5 %, turnover 343 million francs), the cognac firm Taransaud is 18th (11.1 % profitability, turnover 106 million francs) Vicard of Cognac is 25th (10.2 %, turnover 124 million francs) and Radoux of Jonzac is 28th (10 %, turnover 156 million francs).
