Winegrowers and state aid

Europe is calling on 631 winegrowers in Charente and Charente-Maritime to pay back the financial aid received from France in 1998 to diversify their production. Brussels considers that this aid distorted competition in the wine markets. The angry winegrowers met in Cognac on Thursday 23 April.

The Charente Libre is offering a supplement in its 21 April edition devoted to cognac just as the decree setting the boundaries of the production area was published 100 years ago on 1st May. About 50,000 people in Charente and Charente-Maritime earn their living from the production of cognac (5,233 business concerns).

A 350 liter barrel of cognac from the Frippon cognac house has been loaded onto a Scandinavian ship stopping over in Bordeaux : the aim is to see how the eau-de-vie will age when kept on board for a year.
