2009 Concours général : awards for cognac and pineau

12 cognacs and 22 pineaux have won awards in the 2009 Concours general at the Paris Agriculture Trade Fair. Here are the gold medals :
Gold medals for cognac
 Paul Giraud at Bouteville (VSOP cognac),
Extra 1755 from Gautier at Aigre (XO cognac),
Jacques Estève at Celles (XO cognac),
Très Vieille Grande Champagne from Sarl Henri Geffard at Verrières (cognac XO).

Capbern-Gasqueton at Gimeux (white pineau),
Plantis des Vallées at Macqueville (white pineau),
Les Groies at Saint-Bonnet-sur-Gironde (white pineau),

Distell acquires Bisquit

Distell, a South African company specializing in brandy, is going to purchase the Bisquit brand from the Pernod-Ricard group. According to the Charente Libre, Distell may also acquire the Raynal-Pélisson site from William Grant.
LVMH : increased profits

The LVMH group has reported net profit of 2.026 billion euros in 2008, compared to 2.025 billion in 2007. Sales rose by 4% to 17.19 billion euros.
Cognac : fewer shipments

Shipments of cognac have dropped by -8.1% over a year (406.116 hl/pure alcohol, 145 million bottles). The Asian market is falling.
Pernod-Ricard : increased sales

Pernod-Ricard has published profits from recurring operations of 1.19 billion euros for the first half-year of 2008-2009 (+24%). Sales stood at 4.2 billion (+13%).

Jérémy Pouilloux is a second year student preparing a “viti-oeno” BTS foundation degree at the Iréo in Cherves-Richemont (Charente) which he will represent at the national final of the European young tasters’ competition on 25 February in Paris.

Cognac was omnipresent on television last week : a report on Monday evening on LCI about Tamil separatists in Sri Lanka, whose chief runs on Camus VS. Then on Wednesday evening in “Enquête exclusif” on M6 in a report about Macao and its hostess bars, a bottle of Hennessy VSOP managed to pass through M6’s blurring. On Wednesday evening Canal+ showed “Le rescapé de l’hippocampe”, a short film which was filmed last December in the Monnet storehouses in Cognac.
Maison des Maines : lull before the storm

The Maison des Maines calls it a day. This initiative by the Hériard-Dubreuil family to make high-class wine in Charente vineyards, which was officially launched in 2002, was still aiming to sell one million bottles in 5 years. But today the family has been looking for a buyer while moving the prestigious Domaine de Grollet, the ancestral family domain, into the Rémy-Cointreau group. The 13 employees and 2 reps should be found new jobs within the Rémy-Cointreau group.
